Identifying, Educating and Empowering Sumner County Leaders
Leadership Sumner is a personal development program designed to motivate participants to develop and enhance their leadership in addressing Sumner County needs and issues.
Founded in 1988, Leadership Sumner was formed to educate potential and active community leaders about the history, politics and culture of Sumner County and to improve the communication between all county leaders to better maintain and improve the quality of life. Well over 500 participants have graduated from the program since it began more than 25 years ago.
We believe that our responsibility as professionals is to employ whatever skills and talents we have to improve the local educational environment, to increase the public’s awareness of philanthropic concerns, to enhance the cultural environment and to participate in civic responsibilities.
Each spring, we identify individuals that work or live in Sumner County that have already demonstrated civic involvement and have appropriate career experience and long-term leadership potential.
The September-through-June program for the class differs each year but remains consistently an educative process characterized by visitation, discussion, exploration and mutual sharing of ideas. The program includes visits with the mayors of each town, tours of historical sites, an in-depth look at the legal and educational systems, an overview of many of the businesses and industries spread across the county, and a glimpse of Sumner's many parks and recreational opportunities.
Members of the preceding class co-direct the program.
Leadership Sumner offers a practical, supportive platform for community and business leaders to focus on enhancing the quality of life for all citizens of the county. Since the first group met and began their initiative, each annual class has selected and designed a specific project to benefit the county. Participants are involved for at least two years in completing that project or assuring its continuance. These projects vary from image marketing, volunteer coordination, to identifying current needs within the county and structuring solutions.
